Alternative Termite Extermination Methods to Termite Tenting
- Dec 11, 2023
If you have ever faced the problem of termites in your house, you know that the struggle is real. But with the right kind of termite extermination method, you can kick those tiny troublemakers to the curb.
Termite Tenting: Best Choice for Elimination of Drywood Termites
You might have often heard about people trying out termite tenting to get rid of termites. Termite tenting is the best method to deal with a severe drywood termite infestation.
With termite tenting, you erect a tent around the structure that is infested. The tent is then pumped with termiticide gases. The gases penetrate every crevice in the structure and kill the termites.
Is Termite Tenting the Only Way?
Your house might turn into a temporary circus arena but the tenting will eliminate the termites from your house. However, a lot of people ask for an alternative to termite tenting since it involves toxic gases. The termite company will ensure that the house is safe before the residents are allowed to enter but people might still not be inclined to choose the method. If you are one among those who want to explore other choices, then here is everything you should know.

Alternative Methods to Termite Tenting
The first step in any type of termite treatment is identification of the species. Then, the termite control professional will examine your house thoroughly, and depending on the severity and location of the termite infestation, will suggest the right type of termite extermination method.
The termite tenting method is usually recommended by termite exterminators when a drywood termite infestation is widespread and severe. But if you do not want to go with it, then here are some other methods you could choose.
1. Boric Acid Treatment
This method is quite time-consuming and might not be as effective as termite tenting. It involves injecting boric acid into the wood that is infested with termites. You won’t be able to get rid of the infestation on your first try and hence the acid should be applied multiple times before you get rid of the infestation completely.
This method is ideal when the termite infestation is localized to one or two places and is not very severe. Make sure you employ a professional to do the job since borax is toxic and you shouldn’t touch or inhale it.
2. Heat Treatment
This is one of the best alternatives to termite tenting. This method employs the principle of heating the air inside the infested house to such a high degree that the termites and their eggs will not survive.
Termites need moisture to survive and heating the air inside the house to a certain high temperature for a certain amount of time will dry out the bodies of the termites leading to their death.
This method is quite effective especially if the termites are localized. It also does not involve toxic gases. But the excessive heat might damage your house and hence caution is necessary.
3. Microwave Termite Treatment
This is an effective non-chemical termite extermination method for a localized drywood infestation.
This method involves directing the microwaves toward the termite-infested area. The waves penetrate the wood and turn to heat energy which destroys the termites present inside the wood. This method works in the same way as the microwave which heats our food.
This is a quick method and instantly kills the termites. You don’t have to worry about damages to the house and even better, you can stay in the house while the method is being done.
