Is Fumigation Safe for Humans and the Environment?
- Nov 25, 2021
Termites can become hard to handle if the infestation becomes extensive or difficult to access. Fumigation services are recommended in these cases since it helps in complete extermination of termites. Fumigation is an extremely efficient method especially for extensive drywood infestations that are hard to treat with other termite control measures.
While fumigation services are efficient, people usually tend to avoid choosing them since the method uses pesticides, chemicals and gases that can be harmful to humans and the environment. Here we explain the process of fumigation and the things to consider before you opt for the service.
When Does Fumigation Become a Necessity?
The process of fumigation is more complicated when compared to other termite control services. The residents of the house will need to vacate the area of treatment along with their pets and plants for at least 2 days. Inconvenience is the reason why most people avoid choosing fumigation services but it becomes essential in unavoidable cases such as:
- Extreme drywood termite infestation
- Termite infestation in multiple places
- Infestation in places that are difficult to access with other treatment methods
- Possible infestation in places that are hard to locate
Fumigation – The Process
Fumigation is a multi-step process and we have explained it below:
- The termite control professionals cover the area to be treated (in cases of severe infestation -the whole house) with a tarp.
- Humans along with animals and plants are requested to stay clear of the area until the process gets over.
- The ventilation holes and slats are taped shut so that the termites do not escape.
- Now, pesticide vapors are pumped into the tent structure.
- The vapors are allowed to seep into the wood, upholstery and other elements where termite infestation might be present.
- This is done for a set period, usually 24-72 hours, after which the area is de-fumigated and the tent is removed.
- Lastly, the termite control professional would manually check the area for the efficiency of the process and if required follow-up treatments are done.

Is Fumigation Safe?
The chemicals or vapors used in fumigation services are hazardous to humans and animals, but when done right, the process is totally safe. Sulfuryl fluoride is mostly used for fumigation services and is not federally regulated as a hazardous air pollutant by any state.
The Department of Entomology at the University of California researched the safety of fumigation services. In the particular case study, sulfuryl fluoride was used for termite control and they found that there were only negligible traces of the gas found in the air throughout the fumigation and aeration process. Also, the gas dissipates easily making it harmless for birds and insects in the area.
Choosing the right termite control company with experience in the said services will ensure a safe treatment process. Tight tenting would ensure that the termite control chemicals used in the process do not leak outside.
To be extra cautious, it might be better to remove things like upholstered furniture and carpets, which might absorb the gases used for fumigation services. Since animals are more sensitive to the presence of chemicals in the air, it is best to keep them away for a slightly longer period.
